3. Indications for Use.

Divalproex Sodium should be used for treatment of adult patients and children, who suffer from different forms of attacks of generalized action, such as small and serious convulsive attacks, polymorphal attacks, focal attacks, such as psychomotor and motor attacks and other). The medication is the most effective in case of absence of temporal pseudoabsences.

4. Action

Divalproex Sodium acts as an anti-convulsive treatment for different forms of convulsive syndromes and epilepsy, caused by organic diseases of brain on the background.

5. Posology and Administration

Acid of Divalproex Sodium should be taken orally either with or after meal. Start with smaller doses and slowly increase them with interval of 1-2 weeks to allow receiving a therapeutic action. It is recommended to select a supporting dose individually.
Adults should use daily 1-2 tablets (dose of 0.3-0.6g) at the start of therapy, with future gradual increasing of dose to the level of 0.9-1.5g. Dose taken is nigle-shot should be around 0.3-0.45g.
The maximum allowed dose per day is 2.4g.
Dose for treatment of children should be set individually depending on the age of a child, therapeutic performance of drug and severity of disease. Children are usually administered with daily dose of 20-50mg/kg of weight of body. The highest allowed dose for children is 60mg per 1 kilo. It is recommended to start treatment with 15mg per kilo and further increase the dose every week by 5-10mg per 1 kilo until the desired effect is reached. It is recommended to divide the daily dose into 2-3 intakes. For children it is easier to use medication in liquid form for administration (syrup available). The quantity of syrup for intake should be measure, using a dosing spoon with graduations from 2.5 to 5 ml.

6. Counterindications

The medication is not recommended for treatment of patients with compromised functioning of duodenal glands of liver and with diathesis bleedings.

7. Should Be Taken with Precautions, if…

The medication should be administered with care for treatment of patients wich organic brain disease, dyscrasia of blood, diseases of liver in anamnesis, compromised functioning of kidney, pathologic low total content of protein in blood.

8. Interface with Other Medications

Divalproex Sodium is not advised for simultaneous administration with other medications without order of a doctor, as such parallel administration can cause adverse reactions.

9. Overdosing

Symptoms of getting overdosed include: muscle hypotonia, comatose conditions, dysfunction of breathing.

10. Side Effects

Eventual side effects: vomiting, nausea, diarrhea, stomach pains, rise of appetite or anorexia, allergic reactions of skin, drowsiness
In case of long period of treatment with Divalproex Sodium in big doses, there is a chance for temporary loss of hair.
In rare cases Divalproex Sodium can cause severe side effects, such as compromised functioning of duodenal glands and liver, as well as impairment of coagulability of blood.

11. Pregnancy and Lactation

The medication cannot be used during the first trimester of pregnancy and can only be used in smaller doses for treatment in the following trimesters, but only in cases, when other anti-epileptic medications are not effective. When breast-feeding, take into consideration, that the medication is excreted into breast-milk.

12. Driving
