Oxybutynin Chloride
- Indications for Use.
Used for treatment of incontinence of urine, caused by the instable functioning of bladder�s (for example, detrusor hyperreflexia in case of spina bifida or multiple sclerosis), or the same problem having an ideopatic character; nocturnal enuresis in children above 5 years old (as treatment of as part of treatment, combined with other medications).
- Action
Oxybutynin Chloride medication lowers the tonus of smooth muscles, eliminating spasms in the intestinal tract, womb, urine and bile passages, particularly in cases, when it is necessary to relax smooth muscles of bladder. Oxybutynin Chloride has the ability to increase the bladder�s capacity in treatment of patients with neurogenic bladder, it relaxes muscles and reduces the number of muscle contractions in the bladder, as well a it lowers the number of urinations (voluntary and unintentional), restrains urges.
- Posology and Administration
The administration of the medicine should be defined individually, basing on the diagnosis and overall condition of a patient.
Oxybutynin Chloride is an oral medication. Adults should be prescribed with intake of 5mg tablets 2-3 times a day, in some cases it is allowed to take the medication 4 times per day. Patients of elderly age should start treatment with lower doses of 2.5-3mg, which can be taken two times a day. In further treatment, in case of good tolerance, the dose can be gradually increased to reach the level of 5mg, which should be taken two times a day.
For treatment of children of age 5 or older, it is recommended to start with a dose of 2.5-3mg taken twice a day, with further increase of dose up to 5mg, if necessary, which can be taken 2-3 times per day. In case of treatment of nocturnal enuresis it is recommended to take the last dose right before going to bed.
- Counterindications
Obstruction of bowel, disordered outflow of urine from bladder, bowels� atony, serious problems with ulcerative colitis, myasthenia, distention of segmented intestine, glaucoma, childhood age lower than 5 years old, periods of lactation and breast-feeding, hypersensitivity to the active ingredient.
- Should Be Taken with Precautions, if…
The medication should be taken with caution for treatment of elderly patients, patients with compromised functioning of kidney and liver, patients with NCD (neurocirculatory asthenia), thyrotoxicosis, ischemic disease of heart, arrhythmia, chronic failure of heart, prostate gland in men, arterial tension, initial manifestations of benign (several small tumors or one big tumor), patients, who have just undergone a surgery on intestinal tract, patients with non-specific ulcer colitis, patients, who have hernia of esophageal opening, combined with inflammatory conditions.

Use of this medication in combination with other medicines is allowef only with doctor�s prescription, as self-administration of other substances in combination with Oxybutynin therapy may cause unpredictable affect of health condition.
- Overdosing
Symptoms of getting overdosed include: redness of face, agitation of CNS (tremor, unrest, irritancy, delirium, convulsions, hallucinations), vomiting, fever, tachycardia, nausea, hyper- or hypotension, paralysis, respiratory distress, coma.

Side Effects
Decreased perspiration, dryness of mouth, drowsiness, constipations, blurring of vision, lowering of sexual functioning, headaches, vomiting and nausea, deglutitive problems, sleeping problems, weakness and fatigability.
Stranguria is a very rare side effect, which can be developed from intake of Oxybutynin. Inform your doctor immediately, if you develop this problem.

Pregnancy and Lactation
Do not use Oxybutynin for treatment during pregnancy. Breast-feeding should be ceased for the period of treatment, as the medication is excreted into breast-milk and may cause development of side effects in the baby.
