3. Indications for Use.

Venlafaxine is used for prevention and treatment of different origins of depressions, social phobias and anxiety disorders.

4. Action

The medication has double effect. Its performance is visible in both treatment of depression and anxiety. The medication is also effective for prevention of depressive conditions.

5. Posology and Administration

For treatment of moderate and mild depressions the medication should be use 2 times a day in the dose of 37.5mg (after 2 weeks of treatment the dose can be increased up to 75mg taken 2 times a day, if necessary).
For treatment of depressions in severe form the medication should be taken in dose of 75 mg twice a day (after such treatment the dose can be increased by 75 mg per day once every 3-4 days).
The highest allowed daily dose is 375 mg per day.
Special instructions:
When cancelling intake of the medication, as with other medications with anti-depressive action, it is not allowed to discontinue use of Venlafaxine abruptly. Particularly when the medication is taken in high doses, it is necessary to cancel the treatment gradually to not cause cancellation syndrome in patients.
When the medication is used in elderly people and patients of advanced age, it does not need any dose correction, but it should be administered with caution, as many elderly patients also suffer from such diseases as disorder of kidney functioning and other. It is recommended to take the smallest effective dose for treatment of this group of patients. In case of elevation of Venlafaxine dose, it is necessary to perform thorough check-up of a patient.

6. Counterindications

Venlafaxine medication is counterindicated in the following conditions: severe disorders of liver or kidney functioning, hypersensitivity to Venlafaxine or other components of the medication. Teenage and childhood age below 18 years old (as the efficiency and safety of use of the medication have not been proved for this age group). Supposed or determined pregnancy, period of lactation (not enough information from controlled medical studies).

7. Should Be Taken with Precautions, if…

It is recommended to use Venlafaxine medication with caution for treatment of patients with diseases of heart and vessels, liver and kidney diseases; unstable stenocardia, recently occured myocardial infarction, arterial hypertension, convulsive disorder, tachycardia, high intraocular tension, manic conditions, closed-angle glaucoma, inclination to bleeding of mucous coatings and skin integuments; basically reduced body mass, as well as caution should be taken, when using medication for treatment of elderly patients. Patients, who have depressive disorders should start treatment only after taking into account the high risk of developing suicidal inclinations.

9. Overdosing

In case of getting overdosed on Venlafaxine, there is a high risk of developing oxygen lack, tachycardia, low arterial tension, convulsive disorders, dizziness, impairment of consciousness of different forms of severity (recession of level of wakefulness – from coma to drowsiness). When constantly using alcohol or any other medications, which can cause psychotropic effect, the medication has higher probability of causing lethal outcome.

10. Side Effects

Most side effects emerge due to incorrect dose of Venlafaxine. Usual symptoms include: fatigability, weakness, anorexia, nausea, constipation, vomiting, dryness of mouth; in some cases – tooth-grinding during sleep. Changes of taste; hepatitis, changes of liver functions, elevation cholesterin level, lowering of body mass; in some cases, increasing of body weight.
Fluxions (dilatation of blood vessels), elevation of arterial tension; tachycardia, faintness, disorders of ejaculation, disorder of orgasm, disorders of erection, difficulty in orgasm in women, in some cases � increasing of libido, difficulty in the beginning of urination excessive loss of blood in menstruations, disorders of vision, retention of urination; in some cases – dermatorrhagia, disorders of taste, effusion of blood to mucous membranes. Occasionally hypersensitivity to ultraviolet light.
When Venlafaxine treatment is abruptly cancelled or in case of rapid decrease of a dose, there is a probability of developing drowsiness, fatigability, headache, vomiting, nausea, anorexia, dizziness, dryness of mouth, diarrhea, anxiety, insomnia, nervous irritability, hypomania, disorientation, sweatiness, paresthesia. Such symptoms are usually insignificant and go away with continued treatment.

11. Pregnancy and Lactation

There have not been any adequately controlled medical studies of safety of use of the medication in the period of pregnancy and the safety has not been proved. Application of Venlafaxine in the period of pregnancy or in case of supposed pregnancy is not recommended and is only allowed in case of severe necessity. It is necessary to warn female patients, who are in reproductive age about the fact that necessary contraception should be used, while applying Venlafaxine for treatment and that in case of getting pregnant or planning to get pregnant it is necessary to warn a doctor immediately.
If Venlafaxine needs to be used during the period of lactation, it is recommended to discontinue breast-feeding.
If Venlafaxine was used immediately before giving birth to a child, then it is necessary to understand that the child might develop symptoms of cancellation of treatment.
