3. Indications for Use.

— treatment of essential hypertension (as a part of combined therapy);
— syndrome of edema in case of chronic failure of heart (can be used as a monotherapy and combined with a standard therapy);
— the conditions associated with secondary hyperaldosteronism that can develop (adrenopathy), particularly cirrhosis of liver combined with edemas and/or dropsy, nephrotic syndrome and other conditions, associated with edemas;
— hypomagnesemia/hypopotassemia (as an auxiliary treatment of their prophylaxis in the period of diuretic therapy and in cases when used of correction of potassium level modes is not possible);
— for treatment of Conn’s syndrome (primary hyperaldosteronism) — for a short-term treatment course before surgery;
— in order to diagnose primary hyperaldostrenism.

4. Action

Spironolactone effectively lowers the retention of salts and liquid in organism, lowers the amount of hormones, which are responsible for balancing the liquid produced in the body by adrenal glands.

5. Posology and Administration

Take the medication orally. Define the needed dose in each case individually. Average dose for treatment of adult patients is 25-200mg, which should be taken either once a day or divided into several intakes. In severe cases the dose can be increased to 400mg per day. For treatment of children use 3mg per 1kilo of weight per day, which should be taken either as single-shot dose or in two intakes. Choose the dose in each case individually.

6. Counterindications

— hyperpotassemia;
— Addison disease;
— anuria;
— failure of kidneys in severe forms (CK less than 10 ml/min);
— hyponatremia;
— period of pregnancy;
— period of lactation;
— hypersensitivity to the components of Spironolactone.

7. Should Be Taken with Precautions, if…

Spironolactone needs to be taken with caution in case of sugar diabetes, in case of hypercalcemia, supposed of confirmed chronic failure of kidney, general or local anesthesia, surgical intervention, diabetis nephropathy, menstrual cycle disorders, increased size of lacteal glands, liver cirrhosis, failure of liver, and in treatment of elderly patients caution in necessary.

8. Interface with Other Medications

Combination of the medication with other treatments, unless it was prescribed by a treating doctor, is not allowed as can give undesirable side effects.

9. Overdosing

Symptoms of getting overdosed include: vomiting, nausea, drowsiness, fog of consciousness, dizziness, legs cramps, rashes of skin, diarrhea; damage of the balance of water-electrolytes in the body or dehydration of body is possible.

10. Side Effects

Lethargy, dizziness, apathy, drowsiness, headache, fog of consciousness, ataxy, vomiting, nausea, diarrhea, constipation of intestinals, spasms, gastritis, compromised functioning of liver, bleedings and canker in the digestive tract. Lacteal glands pain, erectile dysfunctions in men, lowering of potency in men, uterine bleedings during menopause, which are not connected with menstruation, retention of menstrual cycle or disorders of menstrual cycle, female overgrowth of hair on male-pattern, female changes of the voice. Reactions of skin: itching, eruption, hives. CNeo formations of benign in lacteal glands, legs cramps, chest pain, disorder of blood compositional, medicinal fever.

11. Pregnancy and Lactation

Using Spironolactone is not allowed during the first trimester of pregnancy. Using Spironolactone during the second two trimesters of pregnancy is only allowed in case of serious necessity and only following the strict directions of doctor, taking into account that the expected positive outcome for mother exceeds the possibility of harming the fetus. It is not allowed to breast-feed during treatment.

12. Driving

Due to the side effects, which may be developed because of intake of Spironolactone, it is not allowed to drive vehicles. But in case if a patient does not develop side effects, he might be allowed to drive automobiles.
