Arava is applied in basic treatment for adult patients, who have problems with rheumatoid arthritis in active stage. The medication has the ability to relieve the symptoms of the illness and arrest the development of damages to the structure of joints.
- Action
Arava is a medication, which should be used for anti-inflammatory treatment with anti-rheumatic effect, as well as a way to suppress immune reactions, as the medication affects the cells of epithelial. Arava is applied in basic treatment for adult patients, who have problems with rheumatoid arthritis in active stage. The medication has the ability to relieve the symptoms of the illness and arrest the development of damages to the structure of joints. Clinical effect from treatment is achieved after 4-6 weeks of treatment with the medication and then grows for the next 4-6 months.
- Posology and Administration
Arava is administered orally with the starting dose of 100mg taken as a single-shot dose for a period of 3 days. After such treatment it is better to transfer to support therapy with dose of 10-20mg taken one time a day. The medication should be swallod whole with a decent amount of water or other liquid.
It has not been studied yet, what kind of performance the medication has on patients under the age of 18 years. The information about treatment effect on elderly people above the age of 65 is also limited with analogous parameters as for younger patients.
- Counterindications
Insufficiency of liver, hypersensitivity, severe immunodeficiency (particularly AIDS conditions), marrow bone disorders of blood formation, moderate and severe insufficiency of kidney, severe infections, low content of albumin in the serum of blood, women in reproductive age (should use appropriate methods of contraception during treatment with Arava), pregnancy, lactation period, children and teenagers of age under 18.

Infections: enhancement of susceptibility to infections, development of sepsis and severe infections, a possibility of increased number of eventual infections (bronchitis, rhinitis, and pneumonia).
Dermatologic skin reactions: typical: eczema, intense hair loss, dry skin; not usual: stripping of epidermis, blistering of the mucus coatings and skin, ring-shaped spots on the skin.
Reactions of allergies: typical: rash, insignificant allergic reactions, itching; not usual: hives; very seldom: allergic shock.
Side effects on metabolic process: rare � complete disorder of metabolism; typical: insignificant usual loss of weight.

Pregnancy and Lactation
It is not allowed to use the medication for treatment of women, who are pregnant or in child bearing age (unless proper contraceptive methods are used). It is required to check for pregnancy before starting treatment with the medication.
