3. Indications for Use.

Arava is applied in basic treatment for adult patients, who have problems with rheumatoid arthritis in active stage. The medication has the ability to relieve the symptoms of the illness and arrest the development of damages to the structure of joints.

4. Action

Arava is a medication, which should be used for anti-inflammatory treatment with anti-rheumatic effect, as well as a way to suppress immune reactions, as the medication affects the cells of epithelial. Arava is applied in basic treatment for adult patients, who have problems with rheumatoid arthritis in active stage. The medication has the ability to relieve the symptoms of the illness and arrest the development of damages to the structure of joints. Clinical effect from treatment is achieved after 4-6 weeks of treatment with the medication and then grows for the next 4-6 months.

5. Posology and Administration

Arava is administered orally with the starting dose of 100mg taken as a single-shot dose for a period of 3 days. After such treatment it is better to transfer to support therapy with dose of 10-20mg taken one time a day. The medication should be swallod whole with a decent amount of water or other liquid.
It has not been studied yet, what kind of performance the medication has on patients under the age of 18 years. The information about treatment effect on elderly people above the age of 65 is also limited with analogous parameters as for younger patients.  

6. Counterindications

Insufficiency of liver, hypersensitivity, severe immunodeficiency (particularly AIDS conditions), marrow bone disorders of blood formation, moderate and severe insufficiency of kidney, severe infections, low content of albumin in the serum of blood, women in reproductive age (should use appropriate methods of contraception during treatment with Arava), pregnancy, lactation period, children and teenagers of age under 18.

7. Should Be Taken with Precautions, if…

The medication should be taken only after a thorough medical check up by a professional doctor with experience in treatment of rheumatoid arthritis.
It is recommended to inform patients about possibility of having severe responses of skin in rare cases, as well as about the need to immediately contact a doctor if any kind of skin or mucus coating rash or lesion appears.
Male patients should be aware that the medication eventually gives gene mutations.

8. Interface with Other Medications

Use of this medication is defined only individually and should be done under control of a doctor. Other medications can be taken simultaneously only if a doctor orders you to.

9. Overdosing

There is no information about getting overdosed or intoxicated with the Arava medication.

Side effects on cardiovascular system: usual: elevation of arterial tension.
Side effects on alimentary system: usual: nausea, diarrhea, vomiting, diseases of mouth cavity mucus coating (lips cancering, stomatitis), pains in abdominal cavity: yellow sickness, hepatitis; very rare: acute necrosis of liver, liver insufficiency.
Side effects on nervous system: usual: dizziness, headache, chronic fatigue, tingling and creeping sensation, benumbed sensation; not usual: disorders of taste and anxiety.
Side effects on musculoskeletal system: usual: tendon sheath inflammation; not usual: ligament rupture.
Side effects on urogenital system: there is a high chance of reversible lowering of concentration of sperm, total number of spermatozoids and their mobility.
Side effects on lymphatic system and blood formation system: usual: lowering of the number of leucocytes in blood; not usual: lowering of the number of thrombocytes, anemia; seldom: low content of all blood corpuscles; very rare: increased risk of emergence of malignant edemas,
Infections: enhancement of susceptibility to infections, development of sepsis and severe infections, a possibility of increased number of eventual infections (bronchitis, rhinitis, and pneumonia).
Dermatologic skin reactions: typical: eczema, intense hair loss, dry skin; not usual: stripping of epidermis, blistering of the mucus coatings and skin, ring-shaped spots on the skin.
Reactions of allergies: typical: rash, insignificant allergic reactions, itching; not usual: hives; very seldom: allergic shock.
Side effects on metabolic process: rare � complete disorder of metabolism; typical: insignificant usual loss of weight.

11. Pregnancy and Lactation

It is not allowed to use the medication for treatment of women, who are pregnant or in child bearing age (unless proper contraceptive methods are used). It is required to check for pregnancy before starting treatment with the medication.
It is necessary to inform patients, that if a pregnancy happens, it is necessary to inform doctor immediately and take pregnancy test. In case of positive results the patient should be aware about the possibility of having risk for the fetus.
It is forbidden to breast-feed during treatment with Arava.
