Generic Coumadin is used for treating or preventing blood clots that may occur in the veins and lungs. It is used to treat or prevent blood clots that may occur because of a certain type of abnormal heartbeat (atrial fibrillation) or heart valve replacement. Indications for Use.

- post-surgical thrombosis,
- abrupt blocking of blood stream and acute venous thrombosis caused by a detached piece of thrombus of pulmonary artery (in combination with heparin),
- recurrent myocardial infarction,
- recurrent venous thrombosis,
- as a supplementary treatment in medicated or surgical (thrombolytic) care delivery of thrombosis, as well as in case of electrical conversion of atrial fibrillation,
- repeated pulmonary embolism,
- thrombosis of coronary, peripheral, and cerebral arteries,
- presence of prostheses or valve prostheses of blood vessels (possibly accompanied with acetylsalicylic acid),
- secondary prevention of thromboembolia and thrombosis following myocardial infarction and in case of having atrial fibrillation.

Action

The medication has the ability to suppress the process of vitamin-dependent factors� synthesis of blood coagulation. The medication causes lowering of the number of such components in blood, which results in retardation of coagulation of blood.

Phonology and Administration

The medication should be used for treatment of patients in surgery and should be applied 2-3 days before having a surgery.
The daily dose for start of treatment should be from 2.5 to 5mg per day.
For further treatment the posology should be defined on individual basis . The highest allowed dose should not exceed the minimal dose by over 4 times (and this effect is only individual).
For treatment of elderly patients and people with weak health conditions the medication should be taken in smaller doses.
The whole daily dose needs to be administered in one intake, and the dose should be taken at the same time every day.
The course of treatment should last depending on the clinical condition of each patient. The medication can be abruptly withdrawn.

Counter indications

Acute bleedings, hypersensitivity, severe diseases of kidneys or liver, acute DIC-syndrome, bad arterial hypertension, protein S and C malnutrition, thrombocytopenia, bleeding diathesis, duodenal and gastric ulcer in the stage of aggravation, alcoholism, encephalorrhagia, pregnancy, kidney failure.

Should Be Taken with Precautions, if…

The medication should be used with caution for treatment of patients with impairment of blood coagulation process, as well as patients with thrombocytopenia, duodenal and gastric ulcers in the stage of aggravation, high arterial tension, patients with in compromised functions of kidney and liver, and encephalorrhagia. The medication should be used with caution for treatment of patients, who suffer from chronic alcoholism.

Interface with Other Medications

A number of medications has the ability to interfere with Warfarin, so for this reason it is recommended that patients inform their doctor about any medications they are currently taking or have taken recently. Doctor�s order is necessary, when you are planning to take any other medications, or if you are willing to change the doses for treatment with medications, which you are currently taking.

Overdosing

Side effects on intestinal system: rare – elevation of activity of liver ferments, diarrhea.
Dermatologic skin reactions: rare – skin necrosis, eczema, loss of hair.

Pregnancy and Lactation

The medication is not recommended for treatment of pregnant women, as it may cause progression of bleedings in fetus, which can lead to death. If you got pregnant in process of treatment, the medication should be withdrawn immediately. Warfarin is allowed for use during breast-feeding, but its safety is not completely studied. For this reason, it is recommended to discontinue breast-feeding in the process of treatment, especially during the first three days.
