3. Indications for Use.

The medication can be used as part of complex treatment of endogenous depressions and Alzheimer disease, for symptomatic treatment of parkinsonism and for treatment of Parkinson�s disease.

4. Action

Selegiline is usually used in treatment with Levodopa, and this combination has the effect of renewing the latter on action of human body.

5. Posology and Administration

Selegiline has to be administered only specific to a patient and under qualified medical supervision.
Selegiline can be used for monotherapy at beginning phases of the disease or as an auxiliary treatment during intake of Levodopa. IN any case, the starting dose for treatment should be 5mg, which has to be taken in the morning. The dose of Selegiline can be increased to the level of 10mg per day (which should be divided in two intakes, one taken in the morning and one in the evening). If Selegiline is used as auxiliary treatment in combination with Levodopa, and if Levodopa causes emergence of side effects, the dose for medication should be reduced for further treatment.

6. Counterindications

Extrapyramidal disorders, hypersensitivity, simultaneous intake of antidepressants and the period after withdrawal (up to 5 weeks following the withdrawal), period of pregnancy and lactation.

Selegiline has to be administered cautiously if a patient has severe mental affection, progressive underdevelopment of mentality, pathologic involuntary ictal forced movements of different muscle groups (tardive dyskinesia), peptic ulcers in gastrointestinal tract (including stage of anamnesis), coarse tremor (rhythmic, quick movements of trunk or of limbs, caused by constrictions of muscles), thyrotoxicosis, prostate gland adenoma, pheochromocytoma, inflammation of prostate gland (with the presence of residual urine), tachycardia, closed angle glaucoma, severe stenocardia, age below 18 years (as clinical experience of use of the medication is insufficient), toxic goiter. If the medication is used with Levodopa: failure of kidney or liver, chronic cases of open angle glaucoma, melanoma, convulsive fits, suppression of central nervous system, bronchial asthma, myocardial infarction (also combined with nodal, atrial and ventricular arrhythmias), pulmonary emphysema, age below 12 years (as effectiveness and safety of the medication for this age group is not determined).

8. Interface with Other Medications

Selegiline has the ability to interfere with other medications or additives. Inform your doctor about the medications and additives, which you are currently taking or are planning to take.

9. Overdosing

Dizziness, fits of headache, decreased or increased arterial tension; drowsiness or insomnia, weakness, breast pain, anxiety, convulsive fit, tachycardia, convulsive jaw grasp, arrhythmia, confusion of mental state, hot flash, shock.

10. Side Effects

Side effects on alimentary system: nausea, anorexia, diarrhea or constipation, dryness of mouth, gorge, inflammatory processes in the mouth cavity, gullet, compromised functioning of liver, throat. Side effects on nervous system: dizziness, increased fatigability, headache, insomnia, anxiety, hallucinations, motor and psychic excitement, tingling of the sleep and limbs; in rare cases – mental affections, confused mental state. Side effects on cardiovascular system: in some cases – orthostatic hypotension, in rare cases – arrhythmia, elevation of arterial tension. Side effects on sense organs: visual nerve paralysis, acuity of vision disorder. Side effects on urinary system: retention of urine, in rare cases – frequent nocturnal urinations, painful urination urges. Reactions of allergies: panting, skin rash, bronchial spasm, sunlight hypersensitivity. Other reactions: in some cases – loss of hair, low level of sugar in blood.

11. Pregnancy and Lactation

Selegiline is not recommended for use in the period of pregnancy. If medication has to be taken in the period of lactation, breast-feeding should be stopped.

12. Driving

Selegiline lowers the speed of responsive reaction and concentration of attention, for this reason it is recommended to inform drivers of vehicles and operators of machinery that the medication has a long-lasting impact and can affect their professional performance.
