3. Indications for Use.
Is used for fast reducing of symptoms of migraine attacks.
Sumatripatran is not used in order to prevent attacks of migraine.
4. Action
The medication has rapid and effective action for suppressing and complete removal of headaches (with and without aura). Sumatripatran also has the effect of lowering vomiting, nausea, photophobia and some other phenomena, which are connected with headaches and migraines. In some cases the drug is effective for prevention of frequent attacks of migraine. It is not advised to administer the medication on a long-term basis. The therapy is efficient usually for patients, who have good reaction to non-steroid anti-inflammation drugs and non-narcotic analgetics.
5. Posology and Administration
The medication is designed for oral administration. The pills should be swallowed without chewing, whole, with some amount of water. Generally recommended dose is 50mg (one tablet). In some cases there might be a need for increased dose, which can be enlarged up to 100mg. Do not take the second dose for prevention of the same attack of migraine, if the first dose was insufficient in treatment of symptoms. But it is possible to apply Sumatripatran for treatment of further migraine attacks.
If there is significant improvement after taking the first dose of treatment, but in future the symptoms come back, the next dose may be taken within the next 24 hours. The maximum Sumatripatran dose, which is allowed for intake within 24 hours should not be more than 300mg.
6. Counterindications
- myocardial infarction or stenocardia in the past;
- compromised functioning of kidney and liver;
- attacks of epilepsy;
- elderly age (over 60 years old);
- hypersensitivity to components of the drug.
7. Should Be Taken with Precautions, if…
Any states of epilepsy, including the states, when readiness for convulsion threshold is reduced, as well as cases of controlled hypertension of arteries,
- breastfeeding and pregnancy,
- under 18 years of age (the efficiency and safety of the medication has not been checked yet),
- age over 65 years old (the experience of the use of medication is limited).
8. Interface with Other Medications
Sumatriptan should not be taken in combination with other medications, without first consulting your doctor.
Keep to the prescribed diet before and after the treatment (the diet should exclude tyramine-containing products, such as nuts, cacao, chocolate, citrus fruits, cheese, tomatoes and other).
9. Overdosing
Sumatriptan dose of 400mg and over, taken orally, didn�t cause any visible side effects, besides the regular side effects from medication.
10. Side Effects
- sleepiness, weakness and dizziness;
- short-tempered rise of tension in arteries and arterial hypotension, tachycardia or bradycardia;
- vomiting and nausea;
- rashes of skin, itching and erythema;
- tingling, warmth feelings, pains, squeezes and pressures in different body parts.
11. Pregnancy and Lactation
The experience of clinical use of Sumatriptan for treatment of pregnant women is limited. For this reason it in not allowed to use it for them.
Be cautious, when using the medication for treatment in the period of lactation. It is not advised to breast-feed within 24 hours after taking Sumatriptan medication.
12. Driving
It is recommended to administer medication carefully for those, who are druving vehicles and perform activities, which require alertness.
