Generic Pravachol is used lowering high cholesterol and triglycerides in certain patients. It also increases high-density lipoprotein (HDL, "good") cholesterol levels. It is used along with an appropriate diet. It is also used in certain patients to reduce the risk of heart attack, stroke and death due to coronary heart disease; to slow blood vessel blockage and to reduce the need for medical procedures to open blocked blood vessels. Generic Pravachol is an HMG-CoA reductase inhibitor, also known as a "statin." It works by reducing the production of certain fatty substances in the body, including cholesterol.

Pravastatin Sodium

Indications for Use.

Pravastatin Sodium is used for treatment of hypercholisterinemia accompanied by hypertriglyceridemia, primary hypercholesterinemia (except for the one with familial homozygotic) particularly of types IIa and IIb (in case if therapy with diet proved to be inefficient for treatment of patients with high risk of developing coronary atherosclerosis); can be used as a preventative measure for treatment of ischemic disease of heart (can lower the chances of getting myocardial infarction, has a preventative effect for mortality in cardial vascular illnesses and lowers the need for surgery of myocardial revasculization).

Action

Pravastatin Sodium has the ability to deflate the cholesterin level, when it is enhanced in blood.

Posology and Administration

The medication should be used for oral treatment and can be taken with or without a meal. Starting single-shot dose for treatment is 10-20mg, which should be taken before sleep. If concentration of cholesterin in plasma is very high (over 300mg/dl), the dose can be increased to 40mg taken once a day before going to bed. Best effect from treatment should be expected after 4 weeks of intake. During the first two weeks of treatment it is recommended to correct the dose depending concentration of lipid in plasma. For treatment of patients with failure of kidney or liver the starting dose should not exceed 10mg. For treatment of elderly patients dose of 20mg per day is usually effective for treatment.

Counterindications

Diseases of liver or compromised functioning of liver, hypersensitivity, pregnancy period and breastfeeding, teen-age, adolescence and childhood (generally, age below 18 years old).

Should Be Taken with Precautions, if…

It is necessary to monitor functioning of liver during treatment.
Staying on a diet, which provokes deflation of concentration of cholesterin in plasma is favorable before starting treatment and during therapy. If in process of treatment you feel weakness of muscles, it is recommended to stop administration of medication. If you miss a dose, take it as soon as you remember about it.

Interface with Other Medications

It is not allowed to use Pravastatin Sodium in combination with other medications without doctor�s prescription.

Overdosing

The data about getting overdosed on Pravastatin Sodium is limited to two cases: symptoms of overdosage were manifestations of biochemical analysis changes of blood. Symptomatic treatment of these signs is allowed.

Side Effects

Dizziness, dysfunction of cranial nerves (unwilling eye movements, disorder of sense of taste), psychic tension, not-willed movements of limbs, insomnia, pancreatitis, depression, malignant tumors of liver, hepatitis, nausea, hepatic cirrhosis or necrosis, significant loss of body mass due of abnormal lowering of appetite, muscle pains, mammary glands� pains, acute failure of kidneys, deflation of potency and libido, pigmentation of skin, progression of cataract, dry mucus coatings and skin, hypersensitivity to UV-light, breathing problems, allergic reactions (angiodema, allergic shock, hives).

Pregnancy and Lactation

Pravastatin Sodium is not allowed for use during pregnancy. Breast-feeding should be stopped during treatment with Pravastatin Sodium.

Driving

At the beginning of treatment it is not recommended to operate machinery and perform other tasks, which can be potentially hazardous (should be determined individually). It should be defined in each individual situation, if a patient can perform such activities.
