3. Indications for Use.

Manic conditions, epilepsy (exception - petit mal), preventive measures for treatment of alcohol abstinence, manic-depressive disorders, neuralgia of glossopharyngeal and trifacial nerves, diabetic neuropathy.

4. Action

The medication has anti-convulsive action, and has the bility to moderate conditions of manic depression. It has analgetic and anti-depressive effect. It also induces the normalization of the level of water in the body for non-sugar diabetes patients.

5. Posology and Administration

Administration of Carbamazepine should be defined individually!
The medication is taken orally. For treatment of adult patients it should be used in dose of 100-1600mg per day (depending on the evidence of illness and indications). For treatment of children it is used in dose of 10-20mg per 1 kilo per day, which should be divided in several intakes.

6. Counterindications

The medication is not recommended for intake in case of having damages of liver, defects of cardio conductivity, as well as in case of hypersensitivity, porphyria and disorders of formation of marrowy blood formation (leucopenia and anemia).

7. Should Be Taken with Precautions, if…

Before starting the treatment and in process of treatment it is necessary to regularly perform analysis of urine and blood (cell elements), as well as control indexes of liver. The medication should be administered with caution for treatment of patients with diseases of kidney, liver and heart, for patients with hematologic disorders, latent insanities, elevated intraocular pressure, non-adequate reaction on distal stimuli, diseases, accompanied by states of mixed character convulsions, agitation, patients in elderly age.
It is not recommended to stop intake of the medication abruptly. For treatment of women it is advised to take folic acid simultaneously (during pregnancy or before getting pregnant). If there is a need to prevent elevated bleedings during the last weeks of pregnancy and in newborns, the medication can be used with vitamin K.

Combining the medication with any other drugs and medical substances is only allowed according to doctor�s prescription, as such interface of medications can cause adverse side effects.

Side effects on peripheral nervous system and central nervous system: often – problems with balance, when standing, dizziness, headache, movement of eyes, drowsiness, buzzing in ears, hallucinations, aggressive behavior, consciousness impairment, promotion of mental affections.
Side effects on alimentary system: nausea, vomiting, dryness of mouth, constipation, diarrhea, loss of appetite, stomatitis, stomach pains.
Side effects on cardio-vascular system: seldom – bradycardia, myocardial asequence, arrythmias, collapse, heart failure.
Side effects on urinary system: seldom – kidney failures, compromised functioning of kidneys.
Other side effects include increased mass of the body, imbalance of metabolism, edemas, compromised functioning of thyroid gland, rashes and itching of skin, pneumonia, possibility of pain in legs.

11. Pregnancy and Lactation

Carbamazepine should be used with caution in the period of pregnancy and during breast-feeding and only in case if the use of medication is life-saving and if there is no safer alternative for treatment.

12. Driving

Drivers of vehicles and patients, whose professional activities involve concentration of attention, should stay away from performing these tasks, especially during the beginning of treatment with Carbamazepine.
