3. Indications for Use.
Used for treatment of infections of mucous coats and infections, which are caused by herpetic fever virus, herpes zoster, used for prevention of comeback of illnesses, casued by different kinds of herpetic fever virus, for prevention of infections of cytomegalovirus versus immunodeficiency.

The drug works as an Antiherpetic substance.
5. Posology and Administration
Should be used for 7 days in dose of 1g, taken 3 times during 24 hours for treatment of adults, suffering from herpes zoster.
Should take 500mg two times during 24 hours for treatment of illnesses, caused by Herpes simplex virus. If the disease returns, then the treatment can be continued up to 3-5 days. If the cases are more severe at the initial stages, it is advised to start treatment as early as possible, while the term of treatment should be extended from five days to 10. It is considered optimal to use Valtrex after the appearance of the first symptoms, if the disease returns.
Valtrex can be used as alternative treatment of lip fever (labial herpes). It should be administered in doses around 2g, which should be taken twice during the day. It is advised to take second dose approximately 12 hours after the first dose and no earlier than 6 hours after the first intake. If the doses are taken in the described regime, then the treatment should not be longer than 1 day, as if it exceeds one day, it will not have any serious clinical advantage. It is better to start treatment right after the emergence of the first signs of labial herpes, like itching, heat or prickling.
In case of necessity of suppression or prevention of return of the infections, caused by simplex Herpes virus, for treatment of adult patients with normal immunity indices, the medication should be taken in the amount of 500mg one time a day. With very often returns, such as more often than 10 times a year, Valtrex should be administered in the dose of 500mg per day, which can be also divided into two intakes of 250mg taken 2 times in 24 hour period. Adult patients with immune deficit should take 500 mg 2 times a day withing 24 hours.
The period of treatment should not exceed 4-12 month.
6. Counterindications
In case of hypersensitivity to the components of medication, as well as to Acyclovir and other medications with similar content, if a patient is under 12 years of age.
7. Should Be Taken with Precautions, if…
- serious clinical forms of HIV-infection;
- period of pregnancy and lactation.
It should be administered cautiously if a patient has immunodeficiency, or if he has gone through transplantation of marrow bone or kidney. In case if patient suffers from zoster herpes disseminated, or has initial herpes of genitals, in case of improper functioning of liver or kidney. In case of treatment of elderly patients, they should be advised to take more water in the process of treatment. There should be no sexual interactions in the process of treatment of herpes of genitals with the medication (as the drug does not prevent transmission of the infection).

9. Overdosing
Symptoms of getting overdosed include vomiting, nausea, confused consciousness, headaches.

Side effects include: nausea, vomiting. If the medication is taken for a long period of time and in big doses - hemolytic uremic syndrome or thrombocytopenic purpura with the symptoms of failure of kidney or hemolytic microangiopathic anemia.

Allowed for use in case if the expected positive outcome for mother exceeds the possible negative effect on the fetus (there is very little information about the use of this drug in pregnant patients).
