The medication is used for treatment of overweight and obesity, combied with hypo-calorie bland diet.
4. Action
The medication has the effect of preventing uptake of some amount of fat, which is contained in some of the food, by body. Xenical is applied for curing obesity, particularly, for lowering and maintaining low mass of body. The medication is used in combination with low-calorie dieting and also can be used for treatment of other health conditions, which are not mentioned here.
Effect from use of Xenical is seen in the increased concentration of fats in the fecal masses, which can already be detected 24-48 hours after the first intake. After cancellation of treatment the level of fats in fecal goes back to the normal level usually within 48-72 hours.
5. Posology and Administration
It is recommended to take the medication precisely as it was prescribed by your doctor. Consult a pharmacist or any other medical professional, if your docotr�s instructions are unclear for you, or ask for additional help from your attending doctor.
Each pill should be taken with a large quantity of water (full glass).
It is recommended to take one 120mg capsule of Xenical with the main course of meal or maximum one hour after a meal. If you�ve missed intake of a meal, or if you are eating a non-fat meal, it is also allowed to skin intake of medication.
The effect from the medication will not be enhanced, if you increase the dose of Xenical to the level higher, than you were prescribed.
If Xenical is taken with a very high fat meal, then the possibility of development of side effects and having upset stomach increases.
6. Counterindications
In any condition, it is not allowed to take Xenical without having a doctor�s consultation first, especially for patients with the following conditions:
- chronical malabsorption syndrome (low absorption),
- pregnancy,
- gall bladder diseases,
- biliary engorgement (cholestasis).
Cholestasis is not recommended for use by people, who have the diseases, described above.
It is also not recommended to use Xenical for treatment of women, who are breast-feeding and for treatment of children under the age of 18, as well as people with hypersensitivity to Xenical.
7. Should Be Taken with Precautions, if…
It is not allowed to use Xenical before consulting a doctor, if you suffer from the following conditions:
- diabetes disease,
- renal lithiasis,
- have bulimia or anorexia,
- if you are currently taking any other diet pills.
8. Interface with Other Medications
When treated with Xenical, it is likely to develop lowering of absorption of such vitamins, like A and D, as well as beta-carotene. For this reason, it is recommended to combine intake of Xenical with some kind of multi-vitamin food supplements.
If you are taking multivitamins with Xenical, you should take them at least 2 hours after you take Xenical or before you go to sleep.
It has not been noticed that Xenical has any interface with meta-morphine, digoxin, phenytoin, oral contraceptives, warfarin, nifedipine, alohol and statins.
Loss of body weight because of treatment with Xenical can improve the compensation of conversation of metabolism in patients, who have diabetes. For this reason, in some cases there might be a need to reduce the dose of oral drugs, taken for lowering the level of sugar.
9. Overdosing
There are no known cases of getting overdosed on Xenical. In clinical testings of people with overweight as well as people with normal weight, intake of single-shot dose of 800mg, or intake of 400mg of medication three times a day for a petiod of 15 days didn�t lead to any negative side effects. There are also cases of use of Xenical in the dose of 240mg taken 3 times a day for the period of half a year with no serious manifestations of side effects.
In case of a frank overdosage of Orlistat it is recommended to watch the patient during 24 hours.
10. Side Effects
- acceleration of defecate urges;
- oily discharge from flatus and straight intestine;
- liquid stool as well as discomfort or pains stomach;
- allergic reactions.
In majority of cases these side effects are minor and transient. There is a chance of getting side effects at the beginning of treatment (during the first 3 months) and most of patients didn�t notice development of more than one side effects. Staying on a low-fat diet decreases the chances for having side effects on part of intestinal tract.
There is also chance of developing the following side effects on intestinal tract: meteorism, discomfort or paints in stomach, liquid stool, discomfort or paints in straight intestine, pulpy stool, impairment of gums and cavities of teeth can be developed.
11. Pregnancy and Lactation
Xenical has not been clinically tested, therefore is not allowed for use for treatment of pregnant women.
It is not knownm, if Xenical is excreted into breast-milk, therefore it is not recommended to use the medication for treatment of breast-feeding women.
