Abacavir Sulfate

Indications for Use.

Used for treatment of adult patients and children with HIV infections (as a part of combined therapy for antiretroviral).

Action

Abacavir Sulfate checks the growth of HIV infections and has a selective effect on HIV-1 and HIV-2.

Posology and Administration

The posology of administration of the medication should be defined individually for each patient.
Dosages and regimen: Abacavir Sulfate should be taken orally with or without a meal at the same defined hours. For treatment of adults and children at the age above 12 years use 300 mg 1 tablet or take solution dose of 15ml two times a day (in case if there is impossibility or inability to swallow tablets). For treatment of babies and children of age above 3 months to 12 years, use dose of 8mg per 1kilo of mass of body, which should be taken two times a day. It is not allowed to administer over 600mg to children.

Counterindications

Diseases of liver, hypersensitivity reactions (in some cases can be life-threatening), age below 3 months, period of breastfeeding.

It is not allowed to use the medication for monotherapy. Abacavir Sulfate can only be administered by a professional, who is experienced in treatment of HIV. Perform general clinical lab assessment of a patient before starting treatment with Abacavir Sulfate. There is also a need to control patient�s degree and level of disease, as well as stage of development of the disease.
If any symptoms of hypersensitivity appear (there is a probability that they will appear at the beginning of treatment during first 6 weeks), the drug�s administration should be withdrawn, as such symptoms can be life-threatening. For such patients future use of Abacavir Sulfate is not allowed. Patients should be informed that Abacavir Sulfate does not help stop transmission of the disease to other people, so they should use contraception.

Interface with Other Medications

Abacavir Sulfate has the ability to interact with additives and other medications, taken by a patient. Such combination of drugs can cause changes in drugs� quantity in the blood of a patient, which can lead to over or underdosage. Control the administration of medication.

Overdosing

There is no detailed information of getting overdosed on the medication, but if you have taken a bigger dose than you were prescribed, inform your doctor and seek medical help immediately.

Side Effects

When starting treatment with Abacavir Sulfate, there is a possibility of getting such side effects as high tension of blood, headaches, general distress sensation. Such side effects usually lower or completely disappear as the therapy continues.

Pregnancy and Lactation

Only in case of vital signs for mother, the medication is allowed for intake during pregnancy. Patients (both male and female), who are HIV-positive and who are of child-bearing age, should be informed before the start of the treatment about the possibility of transmitting the disease to a child and about the harm, which can be done to a fetus and influence on its development by treatment with Abacavir Sulfate.

Driving

It is not advised to operate machinery or drive vehicles during intake of Abacavir Sulfate and in the periods of HIV disease manifestations.
