Indications for Use.

The medication should be taken orally in case of treatment of infectious or inflammatory illnesses, which are caused by microorganisms, which are sensitive to Chloramphenicol, such as dysentery, tularemia, brucellosis, paratyphoid, abdominal typhoid, wooping caugh, rickettrial diseases, flea-born typhus, trachoma, meningitis, pneumonia, sepsis, osteomielitis. In case of application outwards, it is possible to use the drug for treatment of skin furuncles, burns of second and third degree, indolent trophic ulcers, fissures of nipples for women, who are breast-feeding. For local ophthalmological use it can be applied for curing of inflammatory eye diseases.

Action

Chloramphenicol can be used as a multiplural antibiotic, as it shows activity against gram-negative and gram-positive microorganisms.

Posology and Administration

Administration and dosage of the medication should be defined individually. Oral dose for administration should be 500mg taken 3-4 times a day. Single-time dose for treatment of children under 3 years of age should be 15mg per one kg of weight. For children from 3 to 8 years of age � 150-200mg, older than 8 years � 200-400mg. The medication should be taken 3-4 times a day. The length of treatment course should be from 7 to 10 days. In case of outward medicine application, it should be put on either directly on the acffected parts or on gauze packs. It is possible to use it for butter paper, or compressed one, as well as for normal bandage. It is necessary to change the dressing depending on the medical condition in 1-3 days, in some cases � 4-5 days.

Counterindications

In case of diseases of skin (such as eczema, psoriasis, fungus diseases), hepatism, diseases of blood, lactation and pregnancy periods, child ages under 4 weeks (newborns), extreme sensitivity to the components of the drug.

Chloramphenicol should be applied for treatment of serious diseases, in case if no other antibiotics proved to be insufficient. Majority of such illnesses require medical treatment in hospital, therefore the drug is not preferred for taking domiciliary. The only case, when the drug should be taken at home, is if it is necessary to complete treatment, which started in hospital, but the monitoring of blood picture is still necessary.

Overdosing

Pregnancy and Lactation

Chloramphenicol is not allowed for use during the period of pregnancy and lactation or breast-feeding.
