Lithium Carbonate

Indications for Use.

Lithium Carbonate is used for treatment of hypomanic and manic conditions of different origins, effective disorders of alcoholism, affective psychosis (schizoactive psychosis and manic-depressive psychosis), migraine, disturbances of sexual functioning, Meniere�s syndrome, some forms of dependence on drugs.

Action

Lithium Carbonate normalizes state of mentality, without causing casual retardation. It also has an anti-depressive actions, as well as sedative effect with anti-manic benefits of migraine.

Posology and Administration

Lithium Carbonate should be taken orally in 3-4 intakes per day with the last intake administered before going to sleep. Medicine should be taken after meals with the starting dose of 0.6-0.9 g per day with gradual increasing of dose to 1.2g per day. Then the dosage can be increases every day by up to 0.3g until reaching the daily dose of 1.5-2.1g. The maximum allowed dose per day is 2.4g. During the period of treatment adjustment to Li+ concentration in plasma the dose should not be less than 0.6 or higher than 1.2-1.6 mmol/l. If the dose exceeds 2g per day, then the treatment should not be longer than 1-2 weeks. After disappearing of signs and symptoms of mania the daily dose should be slowly lowered to the preventive level of 0.6-1.2g. In case of return of symptoms after decreasing the dose, return to the previous amount taken, when the symptoms didn�t come back. In case of severe manic conditions of Li+ concentration in blood of 0.8-1.2 mmol/l, the treatment used for supporting therapy should be 0.4-0.8 mmol/l. If Li+ concentration is over 0.8-1.2 mmol/l in blood, then the dose per day should be decreased.It is considered that the therapy gives positive effects, if it helps achieve stable concentration of LI+ in the blood of adult patients at the level of 0.4-0.8 mmol/l, which should be kept for at least 6 months. For treatment of children it is 0.5-1 mmol/l concentration.

Counterindications

Interventions for serious surgery, hypersensitivity, diseases of kidney or liver, serious diseases of cardio-vascular system, breast-feeding, pregnancy, do not use the drug for treatment of children under the age of 12 years.

Should Be Taken with Precautions, if…

Central nervous system diseases (such as Parkinson disease and epilepsy), diseases of cardiovascular system (such as intraventicular blocks and AV blockades), disturbance of hormonal levels, diabetes, disturbance of endocrine system functioning,psoriasis, infections, failure of kidney, disturbance of water-electrolytic metabolism (retention of water, diarrhea, salt-free diet, vomiting), stanguria.
It is not allowed to drink alcoholic beverages in the period of treatment.

Interface with Other Medications

Consult your doctor to find out whether it is possible to combine treatment with Lithium Carbonate with any other medications.

Overdosing

Epileptic and tonic convulsions, disturbance of speech, rhythmic muscle activity and strain, loss of consciousness, coma, evolvement of extremely small amount of urine, terminal state.

Side Effects

Cardiac rhythm disorders, diarrhea, weak trembling in hands, nausea, kidney dysfunction, vomiting, drowsiness, dryness of mouth, polyuria, hair loss, retardation of formation of blood and thyroid gland activity, pimples.
It is possible that while being treated with Lithium Carbonate you will have increased mass of body and might have formation of bronchocele.

Pregnancy and Lactation

Medication is not recommended in the period of pregnancy. Breast-feeding should be seized during treatment.
