  1. Indications for Use.

   – treatment of neuropathic pain in adults of 18 years old of age and more;
   – monotherapy of partial convulsions with a secondary generalization and without it, in adults and in children of more than 12 years of age;
   – as an additional medical drug for the treatment of partial convulsions with a secondary generalization and without it, in adults and children of 3 years of age and more.

  1. Action

Gabapentin has a sedative effect and takes anti-convulsive action.

  1. Posology and Administration

The medication is made for oral intake with or without meals. The medication should be used for treatment of epilepsy. Adult patients and children above 12 years old should use 300mg three times a day for start of treatment for the first day. The effective dose for treatment is usually from 900 to 3600mg per day. The highest allowed dose is 3600mg per day, which should be divided into 3 intakes 1200 each. The interval between intakes should not exceed 12 hours, if medication is taken 3 times a day. It is possible to use the following administration schedule (dose selection staging): When using 900mg dose � 300mg per day in one intake for first day of treatment; 300mg taken twice a day for second day of treatment; 300mg taken 3 times a day for third day of treatment. When using dose of 1200mg � first day of treatment take 400mg in one intake; for second day use 400mg twice per day; for third day of treatment � 400mg taken three times a day, and then taken every day consequently. For treatment of children from 3 to 12 years of age the medication should be taken in the efficient dose of 25-35 mg per 1 kilo per day, which should be divided into three even intakes. The dose can then be increased until reaching the necessary effect from treatment once in three days: 10mg per 1 kilo per day on the first day, 20mg per kilo per day on the second day and 30 mg per kilo for third day. When the medication is used for a long-term, the tolerance is usually good for doses of 40-50mg per kilo per day. It is possible to use the following schedule for administration of the medication: patients with mass of body from 17 to 25 kg should take 600mg per day, patients with mass of body from 26 to 36 kg should take 900mg per day; patients with body mass from 37 to 50kg should take 1200mg per day; patients with body mass of 51-72kg should take 1800mg per day. For treatment of neuropathy in adult patients it is better to start treatment with dose of 300mg, which should be taken three times per day. The dose can be gradually increased if necessary until reaching the level of 3600mg per day, which is the maximal dose. Patients with compromised functioning of kidneys should find doses according to individual indications.

  1. Counterindications

It is unknown if Gabapentin is efficient and safe for use in children under the age of 3 years or for treatment of children under the age of 12 years as a supplementary treatment of epilepsy, or as a monotherapy. It is also undetermined if the medication is efficient for treatment of neuropathy in patients younger than 18 years of age.

  1. Should Be Taken with Precautions, if…

If the medication needs to be changed, or the dose needs to be changed, or if it is necessary to withdraw Gabapentin therapy, then it is recommended to do it slowly for a period of at least one week.
