4. Action

Efavirenz has the ability to change RNA (generic material of HIV) into DNA form. This change has the ability to be made before the generic code of HIV unites with the suitable generic code of the cell, which is infected.

5. Posology and Administration

• as part of combined treatment of HIV-infection: in adult patients take 600mg one time a day. For treatment of children the posology depends on body mass. For children, whose body weight is 13-15kg, use 300mg, 15-20kg use 250mg, 20-25kg use 300mg, 25-32.5kg use 350mg, 32.5-40kg, use 400, if weight is over 40kg use regular dose of 400mg. In order to develop tolerance to the medication, it is better to take it before going to sleep during the first 2-4 weeks of treatment.
• for treatment HIV infection and chemo prophylaxis following a contact with HIV- infected material (for example, sexual contacts with a person, who is HIV-positive, cuts and injections when working with contaminated HIV-material, entrance of this material on damaged skin or mucosae).
Efavirenz is recommended for intake on empty stomach before going to bed. In case of such administration the probability of emergence of side effects is lower.

6. Counterindications

Periods of pregnancy and breast-feeding, hypersensitivity. The medication should be administered carefully to patients with failure of kidney or liver, patients suffering from alcoholism, cerebral infection, abuse of narcotics, childhood age under 3 years old, weight of body lower than 13 kg.

7. Should Be Taken with Precautions, if…

There is a high chance of rapid development of habituation (resistibility) to medication. Efavirenz should be taken precisely following the instructions and at the right timing for administration. It is not allowed to miss a dose or lower the prescribed dose. It is recommended to take low-fat food.

8. Interface with Other Medications

Do not use additional medications during treatment without doctor�s order. There is a chance of development of adverse effects, if combining Efavirenz treatment with some other drugs, which can interact and can be harmful for patient�s health.

9. Overdosing

There is no information about getting overdosed on Efavirenz, but if you have severe side effects and serious symptoms of overdosage, inform your doctor and visit a medical center immediately. Take your child to a doctor if he has taken too much of the medication.

• Depression.
• Skin rashes - 27% in adult patients and 40% in children, itching.
• Increase level of cholesterol.

• Patients, who are treated with Efavirenz may have a false-positive result on testing for use of marihuana.

11. Pregnancy and Lactation

Evafirenz affects the development of fetus and should not be used during pregnancy.
Women, who are HIV-infected are not recommended to breast-feed, and when treated with Evafirenz, breast-feeding should be ceased.

Efavirenz affects the speed of response and alertness, for this reason it is recommended to avoid driving, when treated with Evafirenz.
