- Indications for Use.
Used for treatment of arterial hypertension;
Can be used as a preventative measure for treatment of attacks of stenocardia (for Prinzmetal’s angina);
Can be used for treatment of myocardial infarctions in acute period and with stable indexes of hemodynamics.
Is applied for treatment of heart rhythm disorders such as sinus tachycardia, and as a prevention measure against supraventricular tachyarrhythmia.
- Action
Chlorthalidone has hypotensive effect, which is associated with lowering of the level of cardiac output, as well as the impact of it on the central nervous system. The hypotensive effect is achieved by lowering the tension of arteries and lowering the minute volume and the systolic discharge. Average dose of Chlorthalidone used for treatment does not affect the peripheral arteries tonus.
- Posology and Administration
For treatment of stenocardia. The daily dose for start of treatment should be 25-50 mg, with further gradual increase of a dose up to 100 mg a day. In some special cases the dose can be increased to the level of 200mg per day, which should be taken in one or two intakes.
For treatment of arterial hypertension. The daily dose for start of treatment should be 25-50 mg of Atenolol single-shot, and if necessary the dose can be increased up to the level of 100mg per one intake. In treatment of this condition it is not recommended to increase the dose further.
For treatment of myocardial infarction. Atenolol is often used in the doses of 50-100 mg per day which should be taken in 1-2 intakes.
For treatment of elderly people and people who have problems with disturbances of excretory kidney system, the medication dosage should be corrected. If treating patients with failure of kidney the dose should be corrected in dependence of individual patient�s indexes.
- Counterindications
Cardiogenic shock, hypersensitivity to Atenolol, atrioventricular block of the second or the third degree, chronic failure of heart, evidenced bradycardia, bronchial asthma, period of pregnancy and lactation, age below 18 years (safety and efficiency are not defined).
- Should Be Taken with Precautions, if…
It is recommended to go through regular medical control, when treated with Atenolol. It is recommended to compensate heart failure before starting the treatment. Alcoholic beverages should not be taken during treatment.
The medication should be taken with caution for treatment of patients with hyperthyroidism and diabetes, as well as patients of elderly age.
The treatment should not be stopped abruptly, instead doses should be gradually reduced in the period of 10-14 days.

Side effects on blood and cardiovascular system: AV block, myocardial conduction trouble, weakening of myocardial contractility, hypotension, thrombocytopenia, heart failure, pain in the breast.
Side effects on digestive tract organs: dry mouth, nausea, stomach pain, vomiting, diarrhea, compromised functioning of liver, constipation.
Side effects on respiratory system: bronchial spasms, labored breath.
Allergic reactions: erythema, itch, hives, rash.

Pregnancy and Lactation
Use of Atenol during pregnancy is only possible, when the expected positive outcome for the mother is more significant that the possible harm for the fetus. It is not allowed to breast-feed during treatment.
