3. Indications for Use.

Used for treatment of cases of hypercholesterinemia, if diet treatment had no effect. It is possible to use the drug for treatment of combination of hypercholesterinemia and triglyceridemia, as well as disease of ischemic heart. The medication can be a good preventive measure against brain insult, myocardial infarction and atherosclerosis.

4. Action

Simvastatin operates by deflating the level of cholesterol in the blood.

5. Posology and Administration

Administration and dosage of this medication should be defined on an individual basis. The dose for the beginning of treatment should be from 5 to 20mg. It is possible to increase the dose if necessary at an interval of 4 weeks. Simvastatin should be taken once a day in the evening time. The biggest daily dose should not exceed 40mg.

6. Counterindications

Compromised functioning of liver in acute forms, problems with kidney functioning, hypersensitivity to drug components, breast-feeding (needs to be discontinued in case of treatment) and pregnancy, in young age.

7. Should Be Taken with Precautions, if…

Simvastatin should be taken with caution if patient suffers from chronic alcoholism, has problems with liver functioning, has hypotension of arteries, serious hypersthenia or hyposthenia of muscles of skeleton, epileptic attacks, failure of kidney functioning.
Liver functioning should be checked and controlled prior to starting the treatment.

8. Interface with Other Medications

Inform your doctor about any medications which you are currently taking, as some medications in combination with Simvastatin may produce negative effect.

9. Overdosing

Several cases of getting overdosed on Simvastatin have been registerd in case of taking up to 450 per one day. There were no special symptoms of overdosing or aggravation of existing side effects.

10. Side Effects

Diarrhea, nausea, constipation, lowering of appetite, bloating, stomach pains, sleepiness, dizziness, headaches, pancreatitis, convulsions of muscles, arterial hypotension, peripheral neuropath, fever, hives, rashes and itching of skin, panting, possibility of hypersensitivity to sunlight.

11. Pregnancy and Lactation

It is not allowed to use the medication in the period of pregnancy, and breast-feeding should be stopped if taking the medication.

During the beginning phase of treatment with Simvastatin it is advised to be cautious, when performing activities, which require you to be alert.
