3. Indications for Use.
The medication should be used for treatment of different infections, caused by herpes virus. It can cause such infectious diseases as herpes fever, genital herpes, chicken pox and herpes zoster.
The medication can as well be used for treatment of other conditions, which are not included in this instruction.
4. Action
Acyclovir has antiviral effect. It has the ability to make the propagation and development of herpes virus slower, as helps the organism recover from infection. The medication is able to facilitate the infections� symptoms and lower the length of illness.
5. Posology and Administration
The use of medication for treatment needs to be done as early, as possible, preferably as soon as the first minor manifestations are noticed (symptoms like tingling or burning, or if blisters appear).
Intake of Acyclovir should not be cancelled even when the treatment has come to mend. All instruction about medication intake should be fulfilled. Use medication until mend turns into complete cure.
It is recommended to take each dose with a glass full of water.
In order to avoid returning of simplex Herpes patients, who are immunodeficient, should take 200mg of medication 4 times after 24 hours, and every 6 hours. In case of evidenced immunodeficiency (in case of intestinal malabsorption or transplantation of marrow bone) take 400mg of medication 5 times within 24 hours. Children at age 6 and above should take 800mg of medication 4 times in 24 hours. Children at age from 2 to 6 years should take 400mg 4 times in 24 hours. Children under the age of 2 years should take 200mg 4 times within 24 hours. The dose can also be estimated on the basis of weight of a patient, taking into account that 20mg should be taken per 1 kilo of weight, but not more than 800mg in 4 intakes in 24 hours. The treatment with medication should be 5 days. For treatment of children from 3 months to 12 years of age if injections are used for treatment, it is recommended to use the dose depending on surface of body: for treatment of infections, caused by simplex Herpes use dose of 250mg per sq.m of body surface once in 8 hours; for herpes encephalitis, herpes zoster, impaired immunity and chicken pox the medication should be taken in dose of 500mg per sq.m.
For treatment of genital herpes the starting dose should be 200mg, taken once in 4 hours at the start of disease, and then 5 times per day for 10 days. For intermittent treatment and for treatment of recurrent cases of genital herpes (less than six times a year), the medication should be taken in dose of 200mg once in 4 hours during period of awakening 5 times for a period of 5 days; for treatment of recurrent herpes with over 6 episodes per year and for long-term suppressing treatment the medication should be used in dose of 400mg twice per day or in dose of 200mg 2-5 times in 24 hours.
For treatment of herpes fever of mucous covers and skin the medication should be used in dose of 200-400mg 5 times in 24 hours for a period of 10 days for treatment of patients with immunity distortion.
For preventive treatment of herpes fever of mucous covers and skin the medication should be taken once in 12 hours in dose of 400mg.
At the awakening of herpes zoster the medication should be taken 5 times per day every 4 hours in the dose of 800mg for a period of 7-10 days.
For treatment of chicken pox the medication should be used for 5 days in the dose of 800mg 5 times per day. It is recommended to start treatment at the very beginning of early manifestations of symptoms and signs of illness.
Children from 2 to 12 years old with mass of body less than 40kg, who have chicken pox should be administered with the medication in dose of 20mg per 1 kilo of weight per one intake and up to 800mg in single-shot dose. The medication should be taken for a period of 5 days 4 times daily. Children from 2 to 12 years of age with chicken pox and with mass of body above 40kg should use adult dose for treatment. Use of medication intravenously by infusion with drops should be done with constant velocity for at least one hour.
When Acyclovir is used for long-term treatment or repeated treatment of patients with impaired immunity, there is a chance of development of virus strains, which are non-sensitive to the medication. Acyclovir does not have the ability to prevent sexual transmission of viruses, and for this reason it is recommended to avoid sexual contacts in process of treatment, even in case of absence of clinical manifestations.
6. Counterindications
Acyclovir is not recommended for use in case of hypersensitivity to medication, including Valacyclovir, and during period of lactation.
The medication should be taken with caution for treatment of patients with kidney failure, dewatering, neurologic distortions, and patients in the developing period of reactions on cytotoxic drugs (for injections intravenously), as well as during pregnancy or in anamnesis.
7. Should Be Taken with Precautions, if…
It is not allowed to take Acyclovir without informing your doctor about any kinds of allergic reactions to Valtrex (Valacyclovir).
8. Interface with Other Medications
There is a chance of interaction of Acyclovir with other medications. Inform your doctor if you are taking non-prescription or prescribed medications, as well as herbs.
9. Overdosing
There were no special symptoms caused by intake of 20g of Acyclovir orally.
In case of overdosage on Acyclovir the following symptoms may emerge: hallucinations, convulsions, and functional failure of kidneys (lapse of output of urine)

11. Pregnancy and Lactation
There are not studies done about the safety and efficiency of use of Acyclovir for treatment in the period of pregnancy. It is only allowed to use the medication in such cases, when the expected favor for mother is more significant than potential risk for fetus. In case of oral intake of big doses of medication, it is recommended to drink a lot of liquid. It is recommended to stop breast-feeding, when there is a need to use medication in the period of lactation.
