- Indications for Use.
— chronic diarrhea;

- Action
This is an anti-diarrheal medication.
- Posology and Administration
If having acute diarrhea the treatment for adult patients should start with taking 2 capsules, and for treatment of children above the age of 5 years it is necessary to take 1 capsule. After taking the first dose, later, it is necessary to take another 1 capsule after each time of defecation, if the stool is still liquid.
In case of having chronic diarrhea the treatment of adult patients should start with the dose of 2 capsules per day, while children should take 1 capsule. It is recommended to define the daily dose on individual basis, depending on how well it affects the lowering of the number of acts of defecation after 1-2 days of treatment. The treatment can consist of 1-6 capsules per day.
The highest allowed dose for adults per day is 8 capsules, while for treatment of children it is recommended to not use more than 3 capsules per 20kilos of body weight. Children from age of 2 to 5 should take the medication in the form of solution orally, taking 1 graduate cup of the3 syrup (around 5ml) for 10kg of weight two-three times per day. When reaching the normal stool condition and if there are no acts of defecation, the medication should be gradually withdrawn within 12 hours.
- Counterindications
– obstruction of bowel (also as appropriate when it is necessary o avoid vermicular movement suppression);
– acute dysentery or other digestive tract infections (as well as those caused by Shigella spp., Salmonella spp., Campylobacter spp.);
– ulcer colitis in acute form;
– childhood age below 6 years;
– pseudomembranous enterocolitis (diarrhea caused by antibiotics);
– period of lactation;
– first trimester of pregnancy;
– diverticulosis;
– hypersensitivity to Loperamide or any other components of the drug.
- Should Be Taken with Precautions, if…
Loperamide should be taken with caution for treatment of patients with failure of liver. If patients develop abdominal distension or constipation, treatment should be withdrawn immediately, especially in patients with AIDS. The medication should be used under supervision for treatment of patients with compromised functioning of liver, in order to notice signs of intoxication of central nervous system on time. It is recommended to replace the volume of liquid and stay on diet during treatment.

- Overdosing
Symptoms of getting overdosed: stupefaction, suppression of central nervous system – loss of coordination, serious pupil dilatation, drowsiness, increased tonus of muscles, obstruction of bowel, respiratory depression. Children are much more sensitive to the effect on CNS.

Vomiting, dry mouth, discomfort and pains in stomach, nausea, meteorism, obstruction of bowel, constipation; drowsiness, fatigability, dizziness, apathy, loss of coordination; increased skeletal muscles tonus, depression of respiratory system, allergic reactions of skin.

Pregnancy and Lactation
Loperamide is not recommended for use during the first trimester of pregnancy. During the second and third trimester of pregnancy the medication should only be used in case if the expected favor for mother outnumbers the possible risk for the fetus.
Loperamide medication is excreted into breast-milk in small quantities, so the medication should either not be used during the period of lactation, or breast-feeding should be stopped.

It is recommended to keep away from driving vehicles or performing any activities, which can be potentially hazardous or those which need precise concentration of attention and rapid psychomotor reaction.
