3. Indications for Use.

Used for treatment of agitation, states of excitement, emotional tension in psychotic disorders; adult patients and children with behavioral disorders.

4. Action

When the medication is taken in small doses, it possesses drowsy and bland effect and has the ability to depress agitation and tension. It is an effective anti-depressant. When the medication is used in big doses, it can be used as neuroleptic. It has the ability to develop moderate anti-vomiting and anti-psychotic effect.
The medication develops anti-psychotic action gradually for a period of several weeks with individual time effect.

5. Posology and Administration

When used for treatment of mental conditions, administration and dosage should be set individually depending on severity of symptoms. In case of treatment of impairments of mild severity the medication should be used in daily dose of 30-75mg; for treatment of medium and severe cases of impairments the medication should be used in dose of 50-200mg per day. For treatment of schizophrenia, toxic psychosis, mania and agitation depressions the medication should be used in daily dose of 250-800 mg for treatment of patients in clinics and in daily dose of 150-400 for out-patient treatment.
When the medication is used for treatment of mild impairments in general practice the dose is around 10mg, which should be taken three times a day. But depending on severity of patient�s condition the dose can go up to 50-200mg per day.
Elderly patients should take 25 mg three times a day. Individual change of dosage regimen in needed in each case.
The average dose for treatment of children is 30mg per day, which should be split into three intakes. It is allowed to use up to 20-40mg per day.

6. Counterindications

— comatose states of any origin, acute SNC;
— hypersensitivity to Mellaril and to phenothiazines;
— severe cardio-vascular diseases;
— blood diseases;
— liver diseases;

7. Should Be Taken with Precautions, if…

The medication should be used with caution for treatment of patients who have diseases of cardio-vascular system, as well as prostatic hypertrophy, closed-angle glaucoma and are at risk of having epileptic attacks.

8. Interface with Other Medications

Consult with your doctor about combination of Mellaril treatment with any other medications.

9. Overdosing

Mental fog, drowsiness, disorientation (up to the level of coma and including such events as signs of paralyses and absence of reflexes), blurred vision, dryness of mouth, stuffy nose, respiratory depression, orthostatic hypotonic, motional disinhibition, convulsions, enhancement of reflex action of segmental apparatus (brain stem and spinal cord), hypothermia. Patients should not eliminate the possibility of aggravation of acute extrapyramidal symptoms, such as disorder of nervous regulation of the work of internal parts of the body and gaze fixation in case of an upward glance.

10. Side Effects

Side effects on nervous system, sense and psychics organs: disorders of psychomotor functioning, excessive sedative effect, hallucinations, disorders of psychomotor functions, extrapyramidal disorders including Parkinsonism (masklike face, with motor inhibition, salivation and tremor), paradoxical effect (excitement, agitation, sleep disorders, mental fog, enhancement of psychotic symptoms); dystonic reactions (twisted neck, tics); disorders of temperature of body, disorders of emotional reactions; drop of the threshold of convulsions readiness. Possibility of faintness fits, photophobia, dry nose, myosis, blurred vision. In very rare cases in the patients ate taking 800 mg of the drug for a long period of time there is reported cases of development of retinal pigmentation, combined with disorders of color vision, reduction of vision, and reduction of night vision.
Side effects on intestinal tract and liver: elevated appetite, lack of appetite, constipation, vomiting, nausea, diarrhea, reduction of bile admission into dodecadactylon, yellow sickness.
Side effects on endocrine status: irregular menstruations, disorders of libido, false-positive pregnancy tests, increased size of lacteal glands, suppression of ejaculation, excretions from lacteal glands both in men and in women, increased weight.
Side effects on cardio-vascular system: tachycardia, arterial hypotonia.
Disorders of composition of blood composition and formation of blood.
Reactions of allergies: rash of skin, angiodema, bronchial asthma, skin eruptions with different manifestations, contact dermatitis.
Other side effects: swelling of parotid glands.

11. Pregnancy and Lactation

The medication is not advised for use in the period of pregnancy and lactation.

Mellaril can be easily used for treatment of patients, who perform potentially hazardous activities, which need precise concentration of attention and speed of response with gradual increase of dosage.
