4. Action

Metoclopramide has anti-vomiting effect, and has the ability to smooth hiccup down and has reculatory action against the functions of gastro-intestinal tract.

5. Posology and Administration

Metoclopramide needs to be taken orally, intravenously or intramuscularly. For treatment of adult patients take 5-10mg orally in three intakes per day before eating; for intravenous and intramuscular administration use 10mg, the drug should be used in dose of 20mg maximum for single-shot. Highest allowed daily dose is 60mg per day for all ways of using the medication. For treatment of children at age above 6 years, use dose of 2.5-5mg, which should be taken 1-3 times per day. Children under 6 years of age should take 0.5-1mg per 1 kilo of weight per day. Highest allowed single-shot dose for children is 0.1mg per 1 kilo. For treatment of patients, who have compromised functioning of liver or kidney it is recommended to use half of regular dose for start of treatment. Depending on individual reaction the dose can be lowered in future.
The treatment should not be longer than 12 weeks.
Adverse effects include mechanical blocking or any other condition, which causes development or enhancement of alimentary tract physical activity or bleeding from organs of intestinal tract. The medication can also cause phermochromicytoma, vomiting for patients with cancer of lacteal glands, reactions of allergies to Metoclopramide, can be problematic for patients during 1st trimester of pregnancy, can be harmful during lactation period and for treatment of patients under age of 3 years.

6. Should Be Taken with Precautions, if…

Medication should be used cautiously for treatment of elderly patients, patients with compromised functioning of liver. This group of people are at increased risk for development of adverse side effects, including disorder of movements. Metoclopramide usage for treatment of children under age of 14 is only allowed under strict prescription. If side effects appear during treatment, the medication should be withdrawn. It is recommended to avoid drinking alcohol during treatment.

7. Interface with Other Medications

It is recommended to use medication according to strict order of a doctor. Combination of Metoclopramide with other medication is not safe in all cases, therefore it is not advised to use other medicines simultaneously with Metoclopramide treatment.

8. Overdosing

Can cause disorders of speech, facial muscles spasms, unnatural position of the shoulders and head, convulsions.

9. Side Effects

Metoclopramide is a well-tolerated medication. In seldom cases it can cause extrapyramidal disorders, such as dystaxia with tremor and reduction of its volume, definitive for parkinsonism. There is a possibility of having dizziness, buzzing in ears, drowsiness and dryness of mouth, when using the medication. If such side effects occur, it is possible to use medication after meals, in order to reduce such effects.

10. Pregnancy and Lactation

It is only allowed to use Metoclopramide during second and third trimester of pregnancy on strict inducations and according to doctor�s prescription.

11. Driving

Use special alertness, when driving automobiles or operating machinery during treatment, especially if Metoclopramide is administered by injections.
