- Indications for Use.
Quetiapine is a neuroleptic medication with antipsychotic action. It can be applied for treatment of chronic and acute psychoses, such as manic episodes and schizophrenia in bipolar disorders.
- Action
The medication is effective for use in therapy of both negative and positive schizophrenia symptoms. Quetiapine has the ability to lower the signs and symptoms of schizophrenia. Posology and Administration
Quetiapine needs to be take two times a day with or without a meal.
Adult patients should use Quetiapine in daily for the first 4 days as follows: for first day - 50 mg, for the second day - 100 mg, for the third day - 200 mg, for the fourth day - 300 mg. After the fourth day of treatment with Quetiapine the medication will be effective if taken in dose from 300mg to 450 mg per day, depending on individual tolerance. For different patients the medication will have different clinical effect, so the dose for treatment can actually vary from 150mg per day and go up to 750mg.
As other medications with anti-psychotic effect Quetiapine for treatment of elderly patients should be used cautiously (and special caution should be taken during the start of treatment). For treatment of elderly patients the dose should start with 25mg per day and then the dose can be gradually increased by 25-50mg per day until reaching the desired effect from treatment. The effective dose for elderly patients is usually much lower than that for younger patients.
For treatment of teenagers and children Quetiapine is not recommended, as its efficiency and safety for this group has not been studied.
Patients, who have impaired functioning of liver treatment with Quetiapine should start from the smallest dose of 25mg per day, with further increase by 25-50mg per day until reaching the efficient effect from treatment.
- Counterindications
Pregnancy and period of lactation, hypersensitivity. The medication should be applied with caution for treatment of patients with epileptic attacks and epilepsy and arterial hypotension.
Childhood and early adolescence.

The medication is not recommended for use in the period of pregnancy. When medication needs to be used in the period of lactation, breast-feeding should be stopped.
