Nateglinide

  1. Indications for Use.

Nateglinide is used for treatment in monotherapy, applied for lowering the level of glucose in blood for patients with diabetes of type II (insulin-dependent sugar diabetes) and for those patients, for whom it was impossible to control the level of glycemia by means of dieting and physical exercising, and who have not used any other hypoglycemic agents for a long period of time for treatment.

  1. Action

Nateglinide has the ability to restore early secretion of insulin, which causes deflation of content of glucose to blood.

  1. Posology and Administration

The medication should be administered orally right before a meal (it is recommended that time between eating and drug intake does not exceed 30 minutes). When the medication is used for monotherapy, it is recommended to use it in dose of 120mg, which should be takn 3 times per day (before each intake of meal � breakfast, lunch and dinner). If such dosage does not give the desired effect of treatment, the dose can be increased to the level of 180mg per one intake. It is recommended to correct doses regularly, depending on the regular check-up of blood picture of a patient.
Combined therapy should be done according to order of a doctor and under medical supervision.
There is no necessity to correct the dosage of medication for patients with compromised functioning of kidney.

  1. Counterindications

   – diabetic ketoacidosis;
   – sugar diabetes of type I (insulin dependent);
   – evidenced compromised functioning of liver (caused by the absence of information of clinic studies for this population of patients);
   – period of lactation and breast-feeding;
   – pregnancy;
   – childhood (caused by lack of information from clinic studies about the effect of medication in treatment of patients of this age group);
   – hypersensitivity to components of the medication.

  1. Should Be Taken with Precautions, if…

When using Starlix for treatment of patients with diabetes of type II (insulin-dependent), it is recommended to take special measures of precaution regarding the development of hypoglycemia. Lowering of concentration of glucose in blood can be caused by intake of alcohol or intense physical exercising.

  1. Interface with Other Medications

It is only allowed to take other medications in combination with Starlix only in clinic under doctor�s supervision.

  1. Overdosing

There are no described cases of getting overdosed on Starlix yet.
Symptoms of getting overdosed: derived from the knowledge of the mechanism of action of the medication, it is possible to suppose that in case of overdosage it will cause hypoglycemia with clinical manifestations of different severity.

  1. Side Effects

Side effects include tremors, elevated perspiration, dizziness, heart beat, hyperorexia, nausea, lack of energy, weakness; imperceptible transient increase of potency of “liver” transaminases in blood, allergic reactions – itching, rash, hives.

  1. Pregnancy and Lactation

Starlix has not been used in the period of pregnancy yet. For this reason there is no information, if the medication is safe for such use. The medicine should not be used during pregnancy. Nateglinide is not recommended for use in treatment of breast-feeding mothers, as there is a high risk of having hypoglycemia of a baby, in case if some (even very small) quantity of medication gets excreted into breast-milk.
